2015 Volkswagen Brazillian Bay Camper (Danbury)

For those who have lived with a classic VW campervan will attest, one quickly comes to realise that the romance of it all can be somewhat reduced by encounters with hills, or the brave notion of overtaking anything at all. What’s more, for true usability some modern creature comforts are always welcome.

So what could be better than an example of the modern, water-cooled variant of the classic Bay Window such as this 2015 Brazillian example? Well, frankly - one with a Subaru engine fitted.

Indeed, behind the pistachio decklid of this charming love wagon lies the heart of the people’s rally car, perfectly tuned and set up to inject real world usability and a far more pleasing tone into the modern bones of this retro camper. Paired with an upgraded 5-speed gearbox, it is a truly superb combination.

Professionally converted by Fellows Speed Shop at a cost of £15,355, this 2.0 flat four lump transforms the car into a consummate daily driver - and should you wish to be naughty, it is of course highly tunable.

Needless to say this camper has had no expense spared to make it an absolute gem of an example beyond the engine, with upgrades including power steering, air conditioning, alarm/immobiliser, uprated shocks, anti roll bar - the list goes on.

Of course it has all the mod cons you’d expect for off-grid living, with a gas stove, fridge, toilet and, thanks to the pop-up roof, room for at least two adults to sleep.

Furthermore, the car received an extensive service with key maintenance of several components in January this year, and is on-the-button and ready to go.

The special touches are too numerous to list here, and we would encourage anyone to come and take a look or request a video walk-around to take it all in.

Whether outrunning the seemingly imminent apocalypse or getting ready for when festivals are no longer banned, this is a cracking example of a retro camper with bags of charm and plenty of go to match the show.
